Emporia Fire responded to a reported injury crash on the Kansas Turnpike between the Emporia and Admire tollgates early Saturday.
Emporia Fire Capt. Willie Ward tells KVOE News the wreck was first reported around 1 am at mile marker 143 southbound, 16 miles northeast of Emporia and four miles southwest of the Admire exit.
Three people were observed at the scene of the wreck. All three declined hospital trips afterward.
Early indications are a vehicle hit a deer. Mid-October marks the official start of the deer mating season, which markedly increases the chances of wrecks on highways and rural roads, especially near sunrise and sunset. If one or more deer cross your path on the road, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol say it’s best to hit the deer instead of swerving to avoid the animal because more serious crashes happen when drivers take evasive action.
