Tax and zoning policy were among the topics addressed during KVOE’s Candidate Forum on Tuesday.
Democrat Gregg Stair and Republican Ken Duft are hoping to fill the Lyon County Commission First District seat opening up with Scott Briggs not seeking a fifth term in office. On taxes, Stair says the county used sales taxes to help keep the mill levy flat. He says he’d consider an effort to lower the sales tax, but he says there have been definite benefits from that revenue stream.
Duft had a similar viewpoint.
Zoning was a much bigger campaign issue two years ago as Lyon County made adjustments. However, Duft says some adjustments may be needed later.
Stair agrees, saying the overall plan needs to reflect the differences between city and county living.
Both mentioned the need for transparency in several areas, especially if outside entities — Newman Regional Health and Emporia State University were named — receive county funds and, in the case of ESU, undergo a major restructuring effort. Zoning changes should also have a more transparent process if those develop, according to the candidates Tuesday.
KVOE’s Candidate Forum series continues Thursday with a look at the Kansas House 76th District involving Republican incumbent Eric Smith and Democrat challenger Chuck Torres. The Candidate Forum airs at 10:06 am on 14 KVOE, 96.9 FM and KVOE.com.
