Outdoor burning is disallowed for all area counties Thursday.
The National Weather Service offices in Topeka and Wichita have issued red flag warnings for Lyon and all surrounding counties. The timing is 12-7 pm.
Fire weather watches have also been issued for Friday with warmer conditions and similar humidity levels and wind speeds in the forecast. Lyon, Chase, Greenwood and Morris counties are involved from 12-7 pm.
Red flag warnings signal critical fire danger, in this case due to ongoing drought, low relative humidity levels at 25 percent or less and gusty northwest winds at or above 30 mph. For the KVOE listening area, they also signal automatic burn bans for the affected counties.
The red flag warning comes after much of the KVOE listening area got light to moderate rain totals early Wednesday, with 0.10 to 0.50 inches of rain reported areawide. The National Weather Service says the Emporia Municipal Airport is officially 1.12 inches below normal for October before the rainfall Wednesday morning. The airport is also nearly 5 inches below normal for the year with a total of 25.06 inches of rain collected.
