After two straight days of critical fire danger, the reported grass fire count is minimal across the KVOE listening area.
Only one fire was reported Friday, a small fire east of Eureka. A cause has not been announced. No injuries were reported.
Wednesday was another story, when a 1,500-acre fire developed. Chase County Fire Chief Steve Fillmore says a power line or equipment failure started the fire, which grew to over a mile wide by two miles long by the time fire crews started getting it under control. With the fire taking place in open territory, no structures were affected.
Numerous fire departments helped to put out Wednesday’s fire, including Cedar Point, Cottonwood Falls, Florence, Matfield Green and Strong City. Several ag producers helped with their own spray rigs. Burns and Cassoday were initially called to help but were canceled.
While wind speeds will be much lower Saturday than they were Thursday and Friday, the fire danger will at least be elevated until further notice as the ongoing drought continues. Stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for updates.
