The Emporia State football team picked up an impressive 44-21 win over #22 Nebraska Kearney Saturday afternoon.
Emporia State Coach Garin Higgins called it a big-time win.
Kearney scored on their first possession on a 1 yard run by quarterback TJ Davis.
The rest of the day belonged to Emporia State. Two plays later Emporia State quarterback Braden Gleason connected with Cory Thomas for a 65-yard scoring pass play.
On their next possession, Emporia States Canaan Brooks scored on a 16-yard run. Caden Dodson kicked a 42-yard field goal to give the Hornets a 17-7 lead after the first quarter.
In the 2nd quarter, Billy Ross Jr scored on a 4-yard run to put Emporia State on top 24-14 at halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, Cade Dodson kicked two more field goals and Billy Ross Jr scored on a 52-yard touchdown run.
In the 4th quarter, Canaan Brooks added an 11-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring for Emporia State.
Billy Ross Jr finished with 150 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Canaan Brooks rushed for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Senior Offensive lineman Xavier Cason said they wanted to prove they had a running attack.
Quarterback Braden Gleason threw for 276 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively Emporia State held the MIAAs leading rusher, TJ Davis to 53 rushing yards and 1 touchdown.
Senior Jaedon Pool led the Hornets with 9 tackles.
With the win, the Emporia State football team improves to 5-2 for the season and are now in a tie for 2nd place in the MIAA standings. They play at Missouri Southern next Saturday with kick off set for 2 pm.
