There was a lot of interest in pets at the Emporia Animal Shelter over the weekend.
There haven’t been a lot of adoptions — yet — according to Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Stephanie Achille after the Animal Shelter held a $25 adoption special to clear space for over 80 cats as part of last week’s emergency intake. Achille says around six adoptions started the paperwork process, so the adoption special will be extended through the upcoming weekend.
Achille says the shelter concentrated on finding homes for the currently-adoptable pets for a reason.
On the medical side, flea bath day “went really well.” Medical care continues, and Achille says the intake cats could be medically cleared and available for adoption by early next week.
The cats and two dogs came to the shelter after a check welfare call to 887 West Fifth this past Tuesday. Achille says the shelter can’t take any surrenders now as it continues to process the intake pets. It’s also adjusting public hours, with appointment-only hours Monday and Tuesday and the shelter closed Saturday for additional medical care. The current schedule has the shelter open to the public 9 am to 3 pm Wednesday through Friday as well as Sunday
