A trial has been delayed for a Chase County man accused of having and trying to distribute child sexual abuse materials.
Strong City resident Walter Haskin was set for jury trial this month, but that was delayed to Dec. 12 to allow Haskin’s defense team more time to review the prosecution’s evidence. Motions are now due by Nov. 22, with a status hearing Nov. 28 before US District Judge John Broomes.
Haskin is accused of trying to upload child sex abuse materials involving a 6-year-old child to a Dropbox account in mid-November. He is also accused of having child sex abuse images on his cell phone.
Baseline sentences are 5-20 years in federal prison for the attempted distribution count and up to 20 years in prison for the possession count upon conviction. Because Haskin is a registered sex offender, according to the federal complaint, Haskin could face 15-40 years in prison if convicted of attempted distribution and 10-20 years if convicted of possession.
