A decision on formal charges is next, with the Emporia Police investigation into an alleged battery incident involving at least one member of the Emporia High football team now completed, but there is still no confirmation when it comes to case details as the regular season comes to a close and playoffs await.
A timetable for the decision from the Lyon County Attorney’s Office is currently pending.
Emporia Police Capt. Ray Mattas says the official investigation was finished by the end of September. Officers had turned over one round of information to County Attorney Marc Goodman shortly after the alleged incident in late August, but Goodman requested additional information and that process wrapped up late last month. Officers had released paperwork indicating the involvement of a so-called “personal weapon.” Mattas says officers are not releasing additional details at this time.
Late last month, USD 253 Emporia Board of Education President Leslie Seeley read a prepared statement saying the district recognizes the “deep level of concern people in our community are experiencing” with the alleged incident. Seeley said the district also continues working with law enforcement and legal counsel, and it was important to maintain confidentiality while that process moves along. The district also has not commented on unattributed reports of player suspensions last month.
Emporia High hosts Junction City on Friday. Playoffs begin Oct. 28.
