Several animals, including 80-plus cats and two dogs, were swept into the Emporia Animal Shelter in an emergency about two weeks ago, but their journey isn’t over yet.
The cats were initially removed from an Emporia home after a welfare call came to the Emporia Police Station. At the home, officers discovered an abundance of animals that then needed removed and brought to immediate care.
As of Saturday, some of the animals underwent surgery and are in recovery.
Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Stephanie Achille says that nearly all of the animals took the surgery very well.
As for the adoption of these pets, Achille states that it is almost time for these cats to be taken into a new home.
The shelter also recently ran a $25 adoption special, resulting in about 5 pet adoptions. Following the recent intake of new pets, the shelter may be planning to run more specials in the future.
For people interested in adopting these pets, there is an application and a short waiting period to confirm the application.
The application is available online at the Humane Society of the Flint Hills Facebook page, email emporiakansasanimalshelter@gmail.com, or go to www.petfinder.com and type in the ZIP code 66801 to find local animals.
