National Drug Take Back Day is this weekend.
Residents are encouraged to spend part of Saturday collecting unused or unwanted prescription drugs and taking them to different drop-off points across the area, including the Morris County Courthouse in Council Grove. Hours will be 10 am to 2 pm.
Lyon County is not officially taking part, but authorities say residents can bring their medications to CVS or Walmart for safe disposal at any time.
All medications brought in through this program are incinerated by the Drug Enforcement Agency. The goal is to reduce the availability of these drugs for illegal purposes and also to reduce any negative impact the medications can have on water supplies.
The program was established in 2010 and has safely handled over 110 tons of medications just in Kansas. More information is available online at the DEA’s special information page at www.dea.gov/takebackday.
