I am more concerned today for the future of the United States than at any time in my seventy-six years of life.
Three topics, seeming unrelated, together, explain my fears.
Those topics are Democracy, Fair Elections, and Civil War.
America’s form of government is known as a democracy. It is based on free and open elections where the majority rules and the citizens accept and respect the outcome of the voting.
I’ll address a Civil War a little later.
In America, we are in a situation where a significant percentage of our citizens believe or act as if they believe the last presidential election was rigged.
How this developed plays out like a soap opera script with presidential incumbent Trump evidently fearing defeat several weeks before the 2020 election and starting to say if he lost the election it had to have been “rigged.”
As we all know President Trump did lose by over 7 million votes! But, in an amazingly bizarre display, he started doubling down on his claim that the election was rigged and in an even more amazing result many of his supporters including many elected congressmen and senators supported his fact less claims.
Ridiculous claims of voter fraud became a daily occurrence. Sixty lawsuits were filed claiming election fraud with absolutely zero hard evidence to back them up. All but one case was dismissed by the courts many with Trump-appointed judges presiding.
The bottom line on all this was President Biden was inaugurated and is our president but the integrity of our American electoral system has been eroded to an alarmingly low position because the defeated candidate continues to claim he was cheated and that the election was rigged.
A DEMOCRACY CAN NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY IF ELECTION RESULTS ARE NOT RESPECTED!
Can you tell me how this ends? The election deniers are not backing down and several may actually get elected to public offices. Responsible leaders from President Trump’s party remain silent. Even after angry supporters stormed the capital on January sixth putting American democracy to its sternest test ever the “big lie” is still alive.
My question is this? How does this end?
A Civil War?
Think about the alternatives and then answer my question. How does this end?
