State officials are asking residents across Kansas to give their thoughts on how the state can better respond to wildfires.
The Governor’s Wildfire Task Force was formed this past July. Led by Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam, it is concentrating on reducing threats, reviewing local and state responses to individual situations and supporting impacted communities or counties. Reducing the fuel load is a top priority with the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office receiving reports of around 6,000 wildland fires per year the past five years. Since 2016, three wildfires by themselves burned over 800,000 acres.
