Kansas will get at least $15 million from Walmart as part of a settlement agreement on opioid medicines.
Attorney General Derek Schmidt says the settlement involves allegations Walmart failed to properly oversee how opioids were dispensed at its stores.
Nationally, the settlement cost is $3 billion, and Schmidt says the Kansas total could increase “substantially” by the time all the money is paid. The settlement says proceeds must be used for treatment and recovery services for people struggling with opioid addictions, while Walmart must have “robust” oversight to halt fraudulent prescriptions or suspicious prescription requests.
Schmidt says his office is involved in investigations and/or negotiations with other companies that may have had a role in “illegally fueling” opioid addictions.
