Saturday was a big day for the Salvation Army of Emporia.
A special media challenge helped to open up the annual kettle campaign. KVOE was stationed at Bluestem Farm and Ranch Supply, and General Manager Ron Thomas says the campaign is starting when demand for services is high.
Over $2,500 was raised in total through the media challenge and a $1,000 donation from the Emporia Kiwanis Club. Salvation Army Capt. Mylie Hadden says the drive is off to a good start.
Meanwhile, the American Legion Post 5 had its first Toy Run to benefit the Salvation Army, including a special delivery run from the Legion post to the Salvation Army campus. Post Commander Clay Childs says a toy run made sense.
Nearly 90 toys, games and other items for kids were donated through the drive, along with over $300.
Two drive-related events are coming in early December. EVCO is matching all donations of $20 bills on Dec. 3, while the annual Badges United effort involving law enforcement and emergency responders on Dec. 10.
The Salvation Army is looking to raise $30,000 between now and Christmas Eve. To donate your time as a bell ringer, call the Salvation Army office at 620-342-3093 or go online to registertoring.com.
