Traffic returned to normal by early afternoon Sunday after a water line break on the north side of William Allen White Elementary School early Sunday.
The break was reported on East 10th between Exchange and Cottonwood right around midnight Sunday. Temperatures in the teens caused the water to freeze in the area, so the street was closed as a precaution.
According to Emporia Public Works Director Dean Grant, the break was on a six inch line and crews had repairs completed just before noon Sunday. Grant says the road is now reopened with concrete work next on the to-do list.
Grant says that work may not take place until next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
1:53 am Saturday: Water line break closes East 10th just north of William Allen White Elementary
Residents wanting to pass William Allen White Elementary School on the north side of the building won’t have that opportunity for a time.
A water line broke on East 10th between Exchange and Cottonwood shortly before midnight Sunday. With temperatures in the teens and wind chills in the single digits, much of the water that bubbled to the surface also froze quickly.
Lyon County Emergency Communications says 10th will be closed until further notice as the Public Works Department assembles a crew and makes repairs. Early indications are that everyone near the failure point still have water.
