Turkey day is nearly upon us which means turkeys will be going into ovens and fryers in abundance Thursday.
With that in mind, residents are reminded that while also being the most family centered day of the year, Thanksgiving is also one of the largest days on the calendar for home fires and other cooking mishaps. In order to ensure local firefighters aren’t unexpectedly joining you at the dinner table Thursday, Registered Dietician Emily Prouse says it is important to be aware of everything happening in the kitchen.
She says communication is also crucial to avoid any mishaps or injuries.
Prouse adds that residents should have more than one person in the kitchen to help stay on top of everything and reminds cooks that if they are planning to fry a turkey this Thanksgiving, it needs to be completely thawed before its dropped in the oil.
In addition to preventing any unexpected flare ups, Prouse reminds residents to avoid any unplanned trips to the hospital due to food born illnesses. She says Thanksgiving cooks need to keep their space clean and take steps to prevent the possibility of cross contamination.
Once your meal is complete, Prouse says residents need to put food away within two hours after eating to avoid any bacteria from forming. She also encourages residents to make sure they go and get some kind of excercise, whether its taking a walk, playing some energetic games or simply tossing around a football.
