Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate around friends and family.
One Emporia tradition returned in-person Thursday morning with the 12th annual Walnut Turkey Day Dash. Even with the number of participants being lower than in 2019, the event is hoping with the return to in-person will help excite the community to participate in 2023.
The event was started by current USD 253 Emporia Superintendent Dr. Allison Anderson-Harder when she was principal of the school. It was an event created to start the day with exercise before spending time with family and friends before gathering for Thanksgiving dinner.
Walnut principal Jami Dakin says it’s a great way to start the day.
The Turkey Day Dash takes a year of preparation and volunteers to help run the event. The Emporia High girls basketball team handed out bottles of water to participants as they crossed the finish line.
Dakin explained where the proceeds from the Turkey Day Dash go towards.
The 5K run/walk is a part of the Emporia Recreation Commission’s annual Super Series.
