It was a strong start to the basketball season for Emporia High Friday night at Ottawa.
The Lady Spartans opened up the doubleheader with a 57-44 victory over the Lady Cyclones. The Spartans capped off the night with a 72-65 victory over the Cyclones.
The Emporia High girls led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and led 32-22 at halftime and never looked back.
Rebecca Snyder and Addie Kirmer each had 17 points in the victory. Emeil Bennett added 10 points. Snyder says it took the Lady Spartans a little bit to adjust to new players and roles on the court.
Even though it was a win, Coach Carolyn Dorsey says there are things they could be better at.
Meanwhile, the Emporia High boys got out to a fast start and led 27-14 at the end of the first quarter. Ottawa pulled within four, 40-36 at halftime. Emporia High led by as many as 18 with Ottawa cutting it to seven late in the contest.
River Peters led the way for Emporia High with 23 points. He scored 17 of them in the first half.
Jalyn King added 17 points and Drew Hess had 14 off the bench.
Coach Lee Baldwin says the Spartans were focused heading into the game.
Emporia High is next in action on Thursday in the first round of the Paul Terry Classic at White Auditorium. The Lady Spartans will play Wichita Trinity at 6:30 p.m. while the Spartans play Spring Hill at 8:15 p.m. You can listen to the games on 14 KVOE-AM/96.9 FM with coverage beginning at 6:10 p.m.
