One person was taken to Newman Regional Health with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an incident at an east Emporia apartment complex Friday.
The incident in question developed around 3 pm. Police Capt. Ray Mattas says officers initially went to 1200 Whittier Place Apartment 333 to find 23-year-old Guadalupe Murillo for the purpose of serving a felony warrant. As officers searched the apartment, Murillo appeared from a closet holding a gun to himself.
Officers removed an unspecified number of people from the apartment to keep them safe before backing out of the apartment. An Emporia Police negotiator kept communicating for two hours, but Murillo shot himself once in the chest shortly after 5 pm. An ambulance took Murillo to Newman Regional Health with suspected serious injuries. Mattas says no officers fired their guns during the incident.
Before Murillo shot himself, a woman approached the apartment building and was detained by Emporia Police. Her status has not been announced.

A heavy law enforcement presence continues at an Emporia apartment complex.
Emporia Police descended en masse on the Whittier Place Apartments at 1200 Whittier Place shortly after 3 pm after a Signal 14 statement meaning officers in danger. The reason behind that statement has not been confirmed by Emporia Police.
Officers focused their attention on the middle building, including one officer observed by KVOE News approaching with a tactical shield in hand. One woman approached the south side of that building and was forcibly detained.
All other details are awaiting confirmation by Emporia Police. KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media will have updates as they come available.
