It’s a busy weekend for holiday activities.
The annual Emporia Artists Holiday Art Sale will be at the Lyon County History Center for the second straight year. Activities will be from 5-9 pm Friday and 10 am to 6 pm Saturday. Artists will bring paintings, woodwork, textiles, ceramics, jewelry, photography, books and other items for the sale.
Also, Saturday will see the American Legion Auxiliary having its Holiday Arts and Crafts Shopping Bazaar at the Legion Post 5, 2921 West 12th. Activities will be from 10 am to 2 pm.
Sunday will have the annual White Christmas at the Red Rocks State Historic Site, 927 Exchange. Holiday goodies and seasonal music from the Emporia High Chorale, Emporia State Flute Choir and Irene Diaz’s cello students will provide holiday atmosphere from 2-4 pm.
Meanwhile, holiday happenings abound in Americus this weekend.
The town’s annual holiday period officially gets rolling with the parade Saturday. Lineup begins at 6:15 pm, with the parade starting at 7 pm. The theme this year is “A Storybook Christmas.” Organizer Britney Hinrichs says it’s a great kickoff to the holiday season.
Hinrichs says Cookies With Santa takes place immediately after the parade, thanks to the City of Americus and Americus Fire Department. The Emporia Artmobile will be on hand. Kids will get goodie bags and families can get blankets. There will also be a food and book drive, with nonperishable food donations to the Americus Food Pantry and books to the Lending Library.
Sunday will have a special potato bar as a benefit for Project Playscape, which is finishing work on a new baseball complex and is raising funds for a new splash pad and renovated basketball court. A freewill donation will support the splash pad and basketball court project. Food will be served at the Americus Community Center from 11 am to 2 pm.
