The Emporia High girls wrestling team opened up its season with a third-place finish in its home invitational Saturday.
The Lady Spartans finished with 114 points as a team, one point behind runner-up Chanute and 23 points behind team champion Shawnee Heights.
Emporia High had two individual champions. Virginia Munoz went 3-0 at 135. Kiana Flores-Delgado went 2-0 at 170.
Munoz wrestled two weight classes down from 145 in Saturday’s tournament. Her competition on Saturday includes girls she’s wrestled against before.
Flores-Delgado says she had some nerves in between her two matches, however, she managed to win both matches by pinfall.
Two area wrestlers placed in Saturday’s tournament. Osage City’s Taylor Ericson finished first at 235. Chase County’s Kinzie Rogers finished second at 115.
Emporia High will travel to Great Bend for a tournament Friday through Saturday.
