The future of the Emporia Country Club is apparently in the process of adding a new chapter.
Negotiations are underway to sell the property to an ownership group led by Skip Evans after a shareholder meeting late last month. Shareholders also considered a proposal from Dynamic Discs owner Jeremy Rusco before moving forward with the Evans-led group.
All other official details are pending, including sale price, future focus of the property and upcoming decisions on employees. Evans has not returned calls from KVOE News seeking information and comment. Monica Duncan, a member of the Evans group, has only said the group is “working through the process” with more information coming later.
Information from the Country Club’s website, emporiacc.org, says initial conversations about a country club started in 1911 as part of a meeting of between 30 and 40 local businessmen. The country club’s charter and first share of stock were issued soon afterward, with those steps coming before the over 100-acre site was finalized the following year. The clubhouse was opened in 1912 and the original nine-hole golf course was completed in 1915. Other amenities were added later, including the swimming pool in 1955 and the Reeble Park pickleball court earlier this year.
