The Emporia High basketball teams are one step closer to winning the Paul Terry Classic after a sweep over Hayden Friday night at White Auditorium.
The Spartans kept their undefeated season alive knocking off the third-ranked team in Class 4A, Hayden, 57-53.
Emporia High led by as many as 14 in the first half only to have a 30-25 advantage at halftime. The Wildcats took the lead and led by as many as six in the third quarter before the Spartans rallied for the victory.
Coach Lee Baldwin says the Spartans found a way to win a game while battling some adversity.
Jalyn King led Emporia High with 20 points. Parker Leeds added 14 and River Peters had 11.
Meanwhile, the Lady Spartans led wire-to-wire in a 52-27 victory over Hayden.
Emporia High led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter and 33-13 at halftime. The Lady Spartans led by as many as 27 in the game.
Coach Carolyn Dorsey says the Lady Spartans took another step in the right direction.
Rebecca Snyder led Emporia High setting a new career high with 26 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Both teams are now 3-0 on the season. They’ll wrap up the Paul Terry Classic Saturday afternoon. The Lady Spartans will play Spring Hill at 2:30 p.m., while the Spartans take on Wichita Trinity at 4:15 p.m.

Spring Hill won the other two games played in the tournament Friday. The Spring Hill girls defeated Wichita Trinity, 50-27, while the Spring Hill boys defeated Trinity, 62-42.
The Hayden girls will play Trinity at 11 a.m. that’ll be followed by the Hayden boys taking on Spring Hill at 12:45 p.m.
