‘Tis the season for holiday shopping — and, unfortunately, holiday thieving.
Criminals have ample opportunity to take your items, and Emporia Police officers discussed several different categories of holiday theft on the most recent J&J Show on KVOE’s airwaves this week. Master Patrol Officer Jaffar Agha says anything visible to burglars is automatically a target.
Porch pirating normally picks up in December. Agha says the start of the pirating season has been slow, but there are ample opportunities for the pirates to strike.
Also, residents are encouraged to do their best to hide the gifts they have at home, whether through keeping their front windows — typically where families proudly display their Christmas trees — closed for as long as possible. Residents are also encouraged to take larger boxes straight to the Emporia Recycling Center instead of letting them sit in Polycarts for up to two weeks. Both steps would reduce the “advertising” about your holiday gifts, thus reducing your risk of being burglarized.
