Redistricting isn’t just a federal or state thing. It may be coming to the Lyon County Commission boundaries.
County commissioners have their weekly action meeting Thursday morning, and they have slated a 15-minute discussion on boundaries for the county’s three commission districts:
*Ken Duft is set to represent the First District after winning the general election last month as Scott Briggs decided against running for a fifth term. The First District essentially involves much of east and northeast Lyon County, including northeast Emporia and towns like Neosho Rapids and Reading.
*Doug Peck represents the Second District, which includes northwest Emporia and towns like Admire, Allen, Americus, Bushong and Miller.
*Commission Chair Rollie Martin represents the Third District, including the south half of Emporia and towns like Hartford and Olpe.
Bids and contracts are lead items for the rest of the agenda:
*Commissioners will consider bids for replacing the Highway Department shop areas.
*Commissioners will also consider approving a contract with MEI Elevator for work at the Courthouse, Courthouse Annex and Law Enforcement Center. The total contract cost is just under $32,000.
*Commissioners will consider a contract with EagleView to provide aerial images, data analytics and geographic information system or GIS mapping to the County Appraiser’s Office. This is a six-year, over $290,000 contract.
Commissioners could also approve a letter of support for the Rural Vitality Center. The Future Service Leaders Organization wants to secure 350 acres to provide what it calls a “transformational facility and resources” to bolster communities in rural Kansas. It’s considering unspecified land in north Lyon County, Osage County or Wabaunsee County for its new facility.
Two executive sessions are planned to end the meeting, which begins at 9 am at the County Courthouse Commission Chambers. Click here for a link to the Rural Vitality Center website.
