An investigation continues as Emporia Police officers work to find the suspect allegedly involved in Thursday’s fatal hit-and-run incident near downtown.
Police Capt. Lisa Hayes says the Kansas Highway Patrol dispatched its Critical Highway Accident Response Team to further determine how Thursday night’s fatality happened at Sixth and Constitution. CHART Team investigations typically happen with significant highway incidents, often involving semis, and can take several hours to finish.
Meanwhile, Angel Alvarado remains at large after allegedly striking a pedestrian with a vehicle around 7:20 pm Thursday, then loading the pedestrian into his vehicle before driving to the 200 block of West Fourth to ditch both the pedestrian and the vehicle. The pedestrian died Thursday night at Newman Regional Health. The victim’s name has not been released, but Hayes says that information may be released early next week.
On Friday afternoon, Hayes said officers contacted witnesses inside an SUV in the area of the fatality incident at Sixth and Constitution. Aside from saying the investigation continues, Hayes is not divulging anything further about those conversations, and she hasn’t said whether officers have connected with somebody who may have been walking with the pedestrian who was killed as a result of the incident.

Authorities continue their search for the man allegedly responsible for a fatal hit-and-run incident in Emporia this week.
Emporia Police has not announced the capture of Angel Alvarado, but Police Capt. Lisa Hayes says officers were able to contact witnesses in an SUV in the area of the fatality incident at Sixth and Constitution. Aside from saying the investigation continues, Hayes is not divulging anything further about those conversations, and she hasn’t said whether officers have connected with somebody who may have been walking with the pedestrian who was killed as a result of the incident.
Authorities are seeking Alvarado after he allegedly hit a person at Sixth and Constitution, drove to a house on Fourth between Congress and Constitution and then left both pedestrian and vehicle behind. The pedestrian was later pronounced dead at Newman Regional Health. Authorities have not released the victim’s name as the notification process continues.
Alvarado is an Hispanic male. He’s 4-foot-11, 145 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He may have a full beard, a goatee or be clean-shaven.
Lyon County Crime Stoppers has announced a reward of up to $1,000 in the Alvarado case, although rewards are paid out only if they lead to arrests and convictions.
