The legal hits keep coming for one-time Wabaunsee County coroner Shawn Parcells.
Wabaunsee County Judge Jeffrey Elder sentenced Parcells to 12 months jail time and 12 months probation for each of the three criminal desecration counts against him. Parcells also received 12 months of probation on each of the three counts of felony theft. The sentences for theft will run concurrently to a 69-month federal prison term for felony wire fraud, while the sentences for desecration will run consecutive to the federal prison term.
Parcells was convicted on the state counts last month. A jury said Parcells unlawfully gained money from Wabaunsee County to handle autopsies in three cases. He also performed autopsies in three different instances without a pathologist doing the work.
Earlier this year, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said Parcells can no longer do business in Kansas after Parcells and three of his businesses had to pay over $250,000 in restitution — and over $500,000 additional in violations, damages and fees — to over 80 customers as part of state legal action.
