Street repairs will take place later, but a failed water main in central Emporia has been fixed.
An 8-inch line failed in the 700 block of Rural and was reported shortly before noon. It took nearly three hours for a Public Works crew to locate the leak, excavate around the site and make repairs.
There is no word on the number of residents affected. A timetable for fixing the street nearby has not been announced.
This is the first reported water main issue in Emporia since brutally cold air hit the region Thursday.

Temperature swings in the winter are typically unkind to Emporia’s underground infrastructure, and a water main break has been reported in central Emporia.
The city announced a water line failure in the 700 block of Rural shortly before noon. Details beyond that announcement have not been divulged.
Residents will need to avoid the area as crews mobilize and begin the repair process. Rural is blocked between Seventh and Eighth.
