Roadways have drastically improved since a wintry mix of ice and sleet turned local streets and highways into the equivalent of an ice rink Sunday night and Monday morning.
Temperatures in the 40s, county and city treatment efforts and an uninterrupted stream of direct sunlight has all but removed the thin sheet of ice from local roads. Some slick spots do remain in certain areas, however, slick conditions are mainly isolated to side streets and residential collectors in Emporia.
Primary roadways are clear and passable in and around the Emporia city limits and on major highways including Interstate 35, US Highway 50, US 56 and US 75. Temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees Tuesday which should help to remove the remainder of ice and a large portion of snow from roadways.
Temperatures will continue to climb Wednesday and are forecasted to reach 50 degrees which should remove any lingering remnants of the recent winter storm that impacted the area last Thursday. Blustery winds have now replaced winter weather concerns for at least one area county.
Greenwood County is in a wind advisory until 8 pm Wednesday evening.
