Local authorities are involved in a now-traditional end-of-year enforcement effort.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is among a host of law enforcement agencies statewide involved in Taking Down DUI. Sheriff Jeff Cope says deputies began overtime shifts Tuesday. Focal points change slightly with each enforcement effort, but the ultimate goal is keeping everybody safe.
When it comes to New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, DUI-related incidents are less common now than they had been in years past, but Cope says deputies have to be watchful throughout their shifts.
Because DUI incidents — alcohol or phone — can dramatically increase the risk of serious injury or death, Cope urges residents to avoid drinking before driving or using a designated driver. Cope also says the financial impact for impaired drivers can be significant, including attorney fees, court costs, possible loss of employment and possible loss of drivers license privileges. Licenses can be suspended for 30 days after the first offense and a year per offense afterward.
Taking Down DUI runs through Monday.
