The Emporia State men’s basketball team closed out 2022 with an 89-64 win over Newman Saturday. The Hornets trailed 9-2 to start the game but would go on a 9-0 run to take a lead they would not give up.
Coach Craig Doty said they did a lot of good things.
The Hornets had 4 players score in double-figures led by Atavian Butler with 17 points. Alijah Comither finished with 16 points. Owen Long added 11 points and Gage McGuire scored 10 points.
The Hornets improve to 10-2 for the season and 4-2 in the MIAA.
The Emporia State women struggled to score in a 52-49 loss to Newman. Emporia State held a 17-4 lead after the first quarter but was outscored 48-32 the rest of the game.
Coach Toby Wynn said they need to find a way to score.
Tre’Zure Jobe scored a game-high 20 points and Katie Horyna added 10 points to lead Emporia State.
The Lady Hornets fall to 9-3 for the season and 4-2 in MIAA play.
Both the women and the men play at Central Oklahoma Monday.
