The Emporia High basketball teams open up 2023 on a high note against Hayden Tuesday night.
The Spartans defeated the Wildcats, 59-52. Emporia High led by as many as 10 in the contest and Hayden only pulled within three in the third quarter and never relinquished the lead.
Emporia High’s bench scored 21 points, which coach Lee Baldwin says he enjoyed seeing the production being spread all around.
Jalyn King led the Spartans with 20 points, 17 came in the first half. The Spartans are now 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Centennial League.
The Lady Spartans defeated Hayden, 43-34. Emporia High led by as many as 13 in the second half with the Wildcats only pulling within three.
Coach Carolyn Dorsey says the Lady Spartans will take a win no matter how it happens.
Rebecca Snyder led Emporia High with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lady Spartans improved to 7-0 and 1-0 in league play. Up next for Emporia High is a trip to Topeka High on Friday.
