Do you know what a potsherd is?
Potsherds are broken pieces of pottery usually found on the floor of a potter’s workshop.
I learned about potsherds from a book by Lysa Terkeurst, entitled It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way.
The book explains that wise potters often pick up potsherds, and shatter them into differing consistencies ranging from dust to smaller pieces. This new mixture, sometimes called “grog” by potters, is mixed in with the potter’s pure clay, giving it more strength, uniqueness, and resilience.
In Isaiah, it is written: “God is the potter and we are the clay”
It isn’t much of a stretch to see potsherds as the disappointments in our lives – disappointments in relationships, in our jobs, or our health and, well, the list is endless.
Now quoting from the book mentioned earlier:
“A broken potsherd can lie on the ground and be nothing more than a constant reminder of our brokenness; Or, when placed in Master’s hands, the Master Potter can be entrusted to take a potsherd, shatter it just right, then use it in the remodeling of me to make me stronger and even more beautiful.”
Has the Master Potter ever used a potsherd in your life to make you stronger or more beautiful?
I’m guessing you’ll agree with me that this is definitely Something to Think About!
