Monday is Martin Luther King Day nationwide, and Emporians will gather at First United Methodist Church to honor King’s legacy and cultural impact.
Monday’s ceremony is being led by Emporia’s Eastside Community Group. Spokesman Al Slappy is encouraging everybody to attend.
Emporia State University will have a notable presence at First United Methodist, but unlike past years, there won’t be any activities on campus — yet. However, Director of Diversity Student Programs Micheal Torres, an ESU alum and Emporia native, says it’s important to recognize the different reasons for the celebration.
Monday’s activities include Scripture readings, music and speakers. This year’s theme is “I’m Your Neighbor.”
Emporia State’s Office of Diversity, Equity + Inclusion is also planning to mark Black History Month, including an appearance by motivational speaker “Backpack Jeff” Young on Feb. 1 and a Black Student Union fashion show tentatively set for Feb. 24.
