The Emporia State men’s basketball team overcame a 22-7 first-half deficit and rallied to outscore Missouri Southern 83-79 in overtime Saturday.
Emporia State Coach Craig Doty said it took a team effort.
Owen Long scored a game-high 25 points, including making 5 of 6 free throws in the overtime and a big 3-point shot to tie the at the end of regulation, to lead Emporia State. Alijah Comithier added 23 points. Peyton Rogers Schmidt finished with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
Kaden Evans scored 11 points. The Hornets improved to 14-3 for the season and 8-3 in MIAA play.
Missouri Southern won the women’s game 86-69. Southern held a 27-10 lead after the first quarter and Emporia State could never catch up.
Lady Hornet Coach Toby Wynn said first-half turnovers were too much to overcome.
Sidney Tinner led Emporia State in scoring with 12 points. Kylee Scheer and Ehlaina Hartman both finished with 11 points each.
The Lady Hornets are now 9-8 for the season and 4-7 in the MIAA.
Both the Emporia State women and men host Nebraska Kearney Wednesday night.
