Emporia’s Spartan Boxing Club is bringing home hardware from the 2023 Golden Gloves State Tournament in Hutchinson.
Mercedes Silvey (145 lbs) won her tournament bout by first round TKO to claim the state title. Junior Robles (139 lbs) walked over to claim his title.
Robles would go on to lose by decision in a match bout later in the evening. Silvey’s amateur record now improves to 3-1. Robles drops to 10-3.
Silvey and 14-year-old Xavier Cheney (120 lbs) will both compete in match bouts Sunday. Cheney holds an amateur record of 1-1.
Sundays fights will take place at Hutchinson’s Memorial Hall.
