Don’t be surprised if early pasture burns begin soon across the KVOE listening area.
Over the past 15 years, there have been controlled burns — and out-of-control burns — as early as mid-January, although the official season doesn’t begin until March or April.
Once again this year, Lyon County is telling residents to fill out burn permits online. Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell says it’s a benefit for both residents and emergency dispatchers.
To get your burn permit online, go to lyoncounty911.org and find “Burn Procedure” under the Services drop-down tab. The form will ask for name; phone number; home address; email address; and type, amount and location of acreage to be burned. It will also ask if the fire is active or extinguished. Permits are needed with each burn.
If residents are not comfortable with the online process, they can call the Lyon County Emergency Communications non-emergency number at 620-343-4225, although they will have to call when the fire is active and when the fire is out.
Lyon County is now joined by Osage County with an online burn permit process. Osage County residents will need to go online to osageco.org and find “Online Burn Permit” under Sheriff by using the Departments drop-down tab. The requested information isn’t as extensive as the Lyon County permit, but it still asks for full name, phone number, email address, type of burn and location of burn.
