Emporia Police says an Olathe man was hurt in Monday night’s pickup-pedestrian incident outside Emporia State University.
Police Capt. Lisa Hayes says the incident happened just after 6:50 pm in the 1500 block of Merchant. The pedestrian, 21-year-old William Hillyer, was in the pedestrian crossing when he was hit by a truck driven by 78-year-old Larry Hartup of Emporia.
Hillyer suffered reported non-life-threatening injuries. Hartup and an unnamed passenger were observed on site but declined hospital trips.
Sage says Hartup was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

One person was hurt after a wreck in north Emporia on Monday evening.
Emporia Police, Emporia State Police and Safety and Emporia Fire responded to 15th and Merchant after a reported vehicle-pedestrian wreck shortly before 7 pm. The pedestrian, currently unnamed, was taken to Newman Regional Health with what Emporia Fire is calling moderate to severe injuries.
Two people in a pickup allegedly involved in the wreck were observed but declined hospital trips afterward.
