Lyon County’s criminal caseload activity as tracked by the County Attorney’s Office stayed in its normal range last year.
Total felony and misdemeanor cases were 482 last year, down slightly from 498 in 2021 and 508 in 2020. Having said that, County Attorney Marc Goodman says there were notable increases in certain criminal categories.
Goodman says marijuana and methamphetamine are still the main drug-related concerns, and have been for years. Fentanyl, though, is an increasing concern.
Lyon County has also had at least five attempted murder cases awaiting trial at this time.
The County Attorney’s Office does not list the number of juvenile, traffic or child in need of care cases — so the total number of cases typically goes well above 2,000 per year.
Besides the number of cases, Goodman anticipates a significant increase in the number of jury trials this year. Jury trial proceedings dwindled sharply the last two years due to COVID-19 and related protocols.
