Friday may not see the end of the Humane Society’s contract involving animal quarantines for Lyon County animals after all.
Negotiations are underway on a short-term, two-month extension involving two quarantine court-hold kennels for Lyon County animals and an unspecified financial increase for Emporia Animal Shelter operations.
The Humane Society of the Flint Hills had tentatively declined an extension of the current contract after at least a year’s worth of negotiations. State law requires that any dog or cat suspected of biting a human must be quarantined for 10 days or longer if deemed necessary by the county health officer.
Last year, the Emporia Animal Shelter had a total of 437 intakes, almost 350 of those from the Emporia city limits and the rest from greater Lyon County. The dog total was 281, of which 212 came from the city. Of the 155 cats that came in last year, all but 17 were from the Emporia city limits. There was also one “pocket pig” that came in from Emporia.
Lyon County commissioners will take a closer look at the matter once a proposed contract is ready for potential action.
