Last summer, Steve Jowers became Madison-Virgil’s superintendent with every intent of staying in the job long-term.
Things changed, and come June, he will move west to be superintendent at USD 448 Inman.
Jowers tells KVOE News it was a tough decision.
Jowers also says it was a move that makes sense. He and his wife, Ashley, are from the Canton-Galva area, and he says family changes had pulled on the couple to move closer to home.
USD 386 board member Jeff Williams says the district is considering partnerships with Kansas Association of School Boards and Greenbush to lead the upcoming search. The board is getting a later start than others, but Williams says the district will be diligent with its work.
Jowers served as assistant superintendent under then-superintendent Stu Moeckel and was listed as superintendent-in-waiting following Moeckel’s decision to become Eudora’s superintendent in 2021. USD 252 Southern Lyon County Superintendent Mike Argabright served as the Madison-Virgil interim superintendent while Jowers gained his superintendent certification. Jowers was named superintendent in July 2022.
Jowers thanked the board for working with him and he says the district’s best days are “just ahead,” with a recent LED light project for both buildings, new several infrastructure programs either underway or soon to begin and the district’s developing ag program.

USD 386 Madison-Virgil needs a new superintendent.
In a special meeting this week, the district board “regrettably” accepted the resignation of Steve Jowers effective at the end of the academic year in June. Board members also briefly discussed the next steps in a search.
Jowers is becoming the superintendent at Inman to be closer to family.
