The Emporia High basketball teams were swept by Washburn Rural in Topeka Friday night.
The girls game featured two ranked teams with Emporia High ranked fourth in 5A and Washburn Rural fourth in 6A.
Washburn Rural led 14-7 after the first quarter and led by as many as 10 before Emporia High tied the game at 20 at halftime. The Lady Spartans led 31-27 after the third and eventually went into overtime tied at 39.
The Junior Blues scored all six points in overtime from the free-throw line.
Coach Carolyn Dorsey says they struggled down the home stretch.
Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 16 points. The Emporia High girls are now 12-3 on the season, and 3-2 in the Centennial League.
Washburn Rural won the boys game 50-42.
Emporia High led 18-8 after the first quarter. The Spartans led 24-10 in the second quarter before the Junior Blues pulled within four points at halftime.
Washburn Rural led 32-31 at the end of the third quarter and that was the closest the Spartans got.
Coach Lee Baldwin says they let another win slip by them.
Sheldon Stewart led Emporia High with 12 points.
The Emporia High boys are now 10-5 on the season and 3-2 in the Centennial League.
Up next for the Lady Spartans and Spartans is another trip to Topeka to face Topeka-Hayden on Tuesday.
