9 am Sunday: Wind shift sends controlled burn towards rural Americus house; minor damage reported
A controlled burn near Americus caused some minor damage when it briefly went out of control Sunday morning.
The fire was reported at 2449 Road C shortly before 8 am, drawing a response from Lyon County deputies and Americus firefighters. Deputies say the initial plan was to burn down a garage near a home at that address, but the wind shifted, sending the fire towards the house and eventually melting some of the siding.
Once the unplanned part of the fire was handled, the planned part of the fire was monitored while it burned itself out. No injuries were reported.
The fire danger is listed as moderate for Sunday and again for Monday despite a significant increase in wind speeds to start the work week. Grasses are still dry, but an increase in relative humidity will prevent the fire danger from climbing to the high or very high category Monday. The area’s next chance of rain is Tuesday night through Wednesday.
