The first incumbent for the USD 253 Board of Education has filed for re-election.
Jeremy Dorsey filed for re-election with the Lyon County Clerk’s Office Thursday morning according to Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat. Dorsey was elected to the school board during the 2019 general election which also saw local voters approve the nearly $80 million Building for the Future Bond Initiative.
Dorsey says his first term on the board has been a “trial by fire” in many ways.
Dorsey says his main focus if re-elected will be on academic achievement and continuing work to help the district’s students fully recover from the well-documented COVID-19-related learning loss.
Dorsey adds staffing will be another key focus. He says it has “been hard to find a permanent staff” especially in recent years and the district will need to find a way to be competitive with other larger districts in order to attract and retain qualified staff members.
Also up for re-election this year is current USD 253 Board President Leslie Seeley and longtime board member Grant Riles. Neither Riles nor Seeley has filed for re-election as of yet.
The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is Jun. 1 at noon.
City commission, city council and school board positions are on the ballot this election cycle.
