While the Kansas City Chiefs will be parading thru Kansas City later today after winning Super Bowl 57 with a magical performance Emporia State athletes are celebrating too as three Hornets were honored by the MIAA for their performances.
Before I share their stories listen closely to the end of my talk as I share the name of the unsung hero that helps ESU athletes be honored this way so often.
Softball’s Ari Cordova, is a Ft. Collins, Colorado native who transferred to ESU this year from Butler Community College. She was named MIAA’s Co-Hitter of the week after batting .500, accounting for 10 RBI, and stealing six bases.
The Lady Hornet Softball team is scheduled to host a tournament at the Trussler this weekend.
Lady Hornet junior Tre’Zure Jobe, from Wichita, picked up the MIAA Women’s Athlete of the Week award after scoring 35 points, pulling down a career-high 8 rebounds, dishing out 5 assists, and securing 3 steals in her team’s hard-fought win over Newman.
Jobe, a former MIAA Player of the Year is 11 points shy of becoming the third-ever Lady Hornet to reach the career two thousand-point plateau.
Alijah Comitheir a 6’7” is a native of Cibolo, Texas, and a junior transfer from U. C. Colorado Springs was named the MIAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time after scoring 23 points in a record-tying perfect shooting game. Alijah was 9 for 9 from the floor including 5 triples! He also garnered 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block in the win over Newman.
Both Hornet teams play UCM and Lincoln on Thursday and Saturday before their last two games at White against Pitt and Washburn.
The new administration at ESU sees athletics as an important front door for the school and these three outstanding athletes are answering that call.
Also answering the call to make ESU Athletic success a big deal is veteran Sports Information Director Don Weast. Those who pay attention understand that selecting, nominating, writing, and sending in entries for every sport into the MIAA each week is a monumental task.
The fact is Don is the best there is and he does this task religiously and without much help. There is little doubt ESU’s Sports Information staff is among the smallest in the conference.
Weast is a jewel that makes Emporia State athletes shine and be recognized in an amazing manner. Thanks, Don.
