The Emporia Recreation Commission continued discussions on a potential future expansion of operations during its monthly meeting Monday night.
Board President Dave Harding says the conversations were brief due to several “outside factors” postponing a number of meetings, specifically those regarding funding. Harding says while the topic appears to be in a “holding pattern” for the time being, the need for increased space at the recreation center remains great as participation continues to rise.
Harding says there are two main options currently on the table, one being an expansion of the current facility and the other being the construction of a second facility, however, commissioners have not given any indication as to which option it may pursue in the near future. A timeline for further discussions is pending.
In other business, commissioners received an update on the upcoming Class 5A state basketball tournament set to be held at White Auditorium. Harding says the staff is ready to go and have the tournament “down to a science.”
An update on will also capital improvement priorities with consultant Dick Horton, a project to replace flooring in the Rec Center’s fitness center and aerobics studio and a proposal from Wright CPA on employer retention tax credits also came before commissioners. The rec commission will reconvene for its monthly meeting in March.
