Emporia High School partnered with Beacon for Hope and held a suicide prevention presentation to support parents with resources and have a conversation with their teens about mental health Tuesday evening.
What is taking up most of your headspace today? Was one of the icebreakers Beacon for Hope Suicide Prevention suggested parents use to start a conversation about how their teens feel in the presentation at Emporia High School.
The presentation comes as part of a parents cafe where the high school presents various topics to educate and provide support to parents. Emporia High School Migrant Education Coordinator Patricia Saenz-Reyes says the high school hopes to provide resources to parents to start a conversation about suicide with their teens.
Executive Director of Beacon for Hope Suicide Prevention Melissa Owen says she is happy the district is willing to have this conversation with parents since suicide is mostly talk among students but is usually not shared with parents.
This is the first suicide prevention presentation for parents of this year at Emporia High School. Saenz-Reyes says this is the biggest topic the high school chose for the parents cafe.
