The Kansas Turnpike Authority is launching into construction season, and it has a lot of projects impacting the KVOE listening area.
In mile marker order:
*Five cashless tolling zones will be added with a project that starts out of the KVOE listening area — southwest of El Dorado — but ends four miles southwest of Emporia. Dondlinger & Sons of Wichita is handling this project after a better than $6.6 million bid.
*Four Chase County bridges, two near mile marker 100 and two others near mile marker 101.4, will be painted by Linder Painting of Lincoln, Nebraska. The estimated cost is $489,000 with work set to be done by October.
*High-friction surfacing will be installed near mile markers 103 and 105 in Chase County as part of a project that could last into November. Farhner Asphalt Sealers of Plover, Wisconsin, won the contract with a bid of over $530,000.
*A bridge two miles southwest of Emporia will be redecked and widened, with work set to continue through most of next year. AM Cohron & Son of Atlantic, Iowa, is handling this project at an estimated cost of over $10.3 million.
*Two bridges just northeast of the Emporia service exit will be raised. The affected bridges are on Kansas Highway 99 crossing the Turnpike at near mile markers 133 and 135. Burns & McDonnell of Kansas City, Missouri, is doing the work with a bid of over $4.8 million.
*Drainage improvements and pavement repairs are coming between mile markers 140 and 143 through December 2024, thanks to a $7.7 million project handled by Bettis Asphalt & Construction of Topeka. Work could be finished by December 2024.
*Bridge redecking and widening is taking place near mile marker 155 in western Osage County. AM Cohron & Son won the project with a nearly $4 million bid. Work may be finished late next year.
