The Kansas Corporation Commission has announced two public hearings about an electric transmission line project connecting the Wolf Creek nuclear generating station to a substation in western Missouri, although neither hearing is in the KVOE listening area.
NextEra Energy is asking for state permission to build a nearly 100-mile-long transmission line from Wolf Creek to the Blackberry Substation in Jasper County, Missouri, about eight miles southeast of Pittsburg. If approved, the high-power transmission line would pass through five Kansas counties, including Coffey.
One public hearing will be at 3 pm March 1 at Iola High School. The other will be at 3 pm March 2 in Girard. Residents who cannot attend these hearings can watch the KCC’s YouTube channel to watch them live.
The Southwest Power Pool says this project is a “necessary economic project” to build transmission capacity and “relieve congestion from western Kansas east to load centers within the SPP region.” NextEra Energy won the right to build the line after a competitive bid process.
