USD 252 Southern Lyon County has its new superintendent.
After a pair of 10-minute executive sessions as a part of a Special Board Meeting Friday in Hartford, Colby High principal Ryan Muhlig was awarded a 2-year contract to become Southern Lyon County’s next superintendent. He’ll begin his duties on July 1.
Muhlig was one of three finalists for the job along with two other building principals, Emporia High’s Dathan Fischer, and Eureka High’s Sean Spoonts.
Board President Emily Darbyshire says the right decision was made.
Darbyshire added Muhlig’s energy stood out during the interview process.
Muhlig has 25 years of experience in education serving as a teacher, coach, dean of students, assistant principal, and principal. Muhlig served in the United States Army Reserve in Emporia from 1992 through 2000.
Muhlig is originally from the Council Grove area. He received his Bachelor’s of Science in Education from Emporia State University in 1998. He then got his Master of Arts in School Leadership from Baker University. He also has a District Leadership Licensure from Newman University which he received in 2021.
Muhlig replaces Mike Argabright who is retiring after 16 years of leading the district and over 40 in education.
